This meta-analysis of 34 randomized controlled trials concludes that Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections for knee osteoarthritis provide statistically and clinically significant improvements in pain and function compared to placebo, hyaluronic acid, and corticosteroids. While early results at one to three months are often comparable to other treatments, PRP demonstrates a distinct advantage that increases over time, becoming most evident at the 6-to-12-month follow-up. The authors suggest that PRP’s benefits likely stem from modulating the joint environment and reducing inflammation rather than regenerating cartilage. However, the overall quality of evidence remains low due to significant heterogeneity in PRP preparation methods, highlighting a need for standardized protocols to confirm these long-term benefits.
