Study comparing long-term outcomes comparing bone marrow concentrate vs microfragmented adipose tissue injections.

This study by Mautner et al. compared the clinical efficacy of Microfragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT) versus Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC) injections for symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. Analyzing 76 patients over a mean follow-up of 1 to 1.8 years, the researchers found that both treatments yielded statistically significant improvements in pain, function, and quality of life (p < .001). Crucially, there was no significant difference in outcomes between the two tissue sources, suggesting that MFAT and BMAC are equally effective orthobiologic options. While lower-grade osteoarthritis (KL Grades 1 and 2) showed the highest responder rates, even more advanced cases (KL Grade 4) demonstrated over a 50% response rate, indicating that both autologous sources provide a durable alternative to traditional conservative therapies.
