Study evaluating bone marrow concentrate as a therapeutic intervention for recalcitrant Achilles tendinopathy.

In a study by Thueakthong et al., researchers evaluated the efficacy of Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)—a process involving the aspiration, concentration, and injection of bone marrow—for treating recalcitrant Achilles tendinopathy. Because BMAC contains high concentrations of growth factors and mesenchymal signaling cells, it was tested on 15 patients who had failed standard treatments for over two years. The results demonstrated significant, lasting pain reduction, with average scores dropping from 6.26 to 2.60 over a 48-week period. This improvement was consistent across both insertional and non-insertional cases, and the procedure was deemed safe with no reported complications at the donor or injection sites. Ultimately, the study concludes that BMAC is an effective biological treatment for patients with intractable tendon pain.
